Denaiyou Turf Care Guide | Proper Ryegrass Overseeding for Warm-Season Lawns

Overseeding Process for Perennial Ryegrass in Autumn

In East and Central China, to maintain a lush green lawn during winter, perennial ryegrass can be overseeded between early September and mid-October. This grass variety establishes a full turf in approximately 30–45 days. It is recommended to begin seeding when the daily average temperature consistently drops below 23°C.

Start by mowing the existing turf to a height of 1 cm using a powered triplex mower. Then, use a dethatcher or verticutter to break up the thatch layer and improve soil aeration. Follow up with a sweeper to thoroughly remove debris and dead grass, fully exposing the soil and creating a healthy environment for ryegrass germination.

For general turf areas, sow 20–30 grams of seed per square meter. In high-traffic areas, increase the rate to 35–40 grams per square meter. It is recommended to use a seeder and apply the seed in two passes in a crisscross pattern to ensure even coverage and avoid bare spots.

If conditions allow, apply a thin layer of fine sand using a topdresser to help retain moisture and protect the seeds from birds. Lightly drag a turf drag mat over the area to ensure good seed-to-soil contact.

Water thoroughly immediately after seeding and keep the soil consistently moist. Germination typically occurs within 7–10 days. During this period, monitor closely and water as needed.

Continue to observe turf density and color changes, and proactively manage pests and diseases. Early detection and treatment are key to ensuring healthy turf growth.
